With funding from the Lombardy Region and the Lombardy Chamber System under the Agreement for the Development and Competitiveness of the Lombardy System, the working group that includes MTM has initiated the development phases of the CIRCULARFISH project, as part of the “Innovation of Circular Economy Supply Chains in Lombardy – Phase 3” call.

The project’s goal is to develop a functional, simple, and reliable aquaponic system that, by optimizing the use of primary and secondary products derived from the cultivation of fish and plants, adheres to principles of environmental sustainability and circular economy.

INNOVATIVE ELEMENTS

AQUAPONICS

By integrating fish farming with the cultivation of plants, the aquaponic technique replicates the natural physical balance between fish and plants.

IoT SYSTEMS

Centralized IoT control systems enhance the efficiency of the facility by enabling automated monitoring.

BLOCKCHAIN

Among the integrated artificial systems, the most innovative element is the blockchain-based traceability system.

INNOVATION IN NUMBERS

In addition to IoT systems, the use of feed also increases the efficiency of the facility. Below is the volumetric ratio between water in the tanks and the land required to maintain the system balance:a

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF AQUAPONICS

The environmental impact of the aquaponic system is minimal in terms of both construction and operation. In line with the core idea of aquaponic techniques, the system employs a circular production method where a symbiotic relationship is established between fish and plants.

From an eco-circularity perspective, it is important to note that the facility is built using recycled construction materials and decommissioned industrial equipment, contributing to the disposal of industrial waste and providing significant environmental benefits.

Moreover, the automated control platform implemented in the system significantly reduces the volume of resources needed for maintenance. For example, the system’s automation, combined with appropriate monitoring of environmental parameters, reduces the need for frequent cleaning, which is performed only when strictly necessary. This results in considerable savings in water resources.

The innovation of CircularFish, however, is not limited to the aquaponic production system. Nutritech S.r.l., the project leader, has already implemented a fish feed production system incorporating various IoT systems for monitoring mixtures and formulations. The symbiosis between these two systems ultimately ensures the formulation of new, properly engineered feeds that utilize organic products derived from the by-products of other supply chains as secondary raw materials.

Unlike current aquaponic systems that do not fully leverage the potential to move towards a circular production system, often neglecting the by-products naturally generated by the correct operation of the facilities, the CircularFish system has demonstrated the value of these secondary products. They can be used directly within the system by creating feeds that are reintroduced to feed the fish in the tanks.

BLOCKCHAIN TECHNOLOGY

Blockchain is a type of digital ledger that uses the Internet to introduce a new model of database that is distributed and secure. The technological innovation of this form of record-keeping eliminates the model based on centralized management.

HOW BLOCKCHAIN WORKS

The emblematic example is Bitcoin. In the case of cryptocurrency, each block contains a certain number of transactions and is connected to another through a peer-to-peer network, which in turn connects to a validation protocol for each new block added to the chain. Each node (i.e., a computer connected to the network) receives a copy of the blockchain, which is downloaded automatically.

In the blockchain concatenation, each new block consists of a group of the most recent transactions, which are recorded and added in chronological order. This allows market operators to track digital currency transactions without the need for a central register.

Each block, therefore, contains a pointer linking it to the previous block and shares the ledger of all information validated by the system. What makes blockchain technology so secure is that the data in a block cannot be retroactively altered without changing all subsequent blocks, which would require the majority consensus of the network. Thus, since blockchain technology is based on an open and distributed digital ledger of transactions, based on the consensus among network participants, the system becomes incorruptible unless the entire network is compromised.

BLOCKCHAIN AND SMARTAGRIFOOD

Blockchain can offer highly innovative solutions in creating a revolutionary traceability system capable of establishing a quantitative and qualitative model for information shared along the food supply chain. This potential puts blockchain at the service of the supply chain, providing new tools to ensure the best food traceability, aiming to achieve new levels of food security and safety.

Applied under a new concept of trust, blockchain is relevant to the food supply chain—particularly the fishing supply chain. The fish supply chain, already heavily affected by illegal activities, has areas of opacity that fail to guarantee producers, retailers, and consumers the quality and reliability of all steps involved. In other words, the real issue is establishing a situation of trust that provides clear guarantees to all stakeholders about not only the quality of the work performed but also adherence to rules and rights of all businesses and individuals directly and indirectly involved in this supply chain.

It is precisely on the issue of trust that the blockchain-based solution developed by the project partners and collaborators is focused. Specifically, MTM, in collaboration with the Department of Engineering (DI) at the University of Palermo and the Reggio Calabria branch of the Institute of Clinical Physiology (IFC) of the CNR, has developed a blockchain-based traceability system. This system certifies the entire production chain, ensuring both product quality and consumer safety. The block validation mechanism based on mining, which underlies blockchain technology, guarantees the authenticity and immutability of the data stored in a distributed ledger through a cryptographic hash function. The immutability of this shared and distributed digital ledger is ensured by the fact that each block in the chain contains the unique hash code of the previous chain, meaning that it is impossible to alter any block without changing the entire chain.

Finally, blockchain does not require any external or internal trusted authority to guarantee the integrity and authenticity of the data. The system itself acts as a guarantor, as it is impossible for anyone to alter the information in the chain. This is because the data is not stored by a single entity but replicated across an entire network of computers. Ultimately, the value of blockchain technology lies in the distributed security of the system.

THE ADVANTAGES OF BLOCKCHAIN

RELIABILITY

Not governed by a central authority but controlled partially by all direct participants of the entire chain, blockchain becomes a less centralized, less governable, yet much more secure and reliable system.

TRANSPARENCY

Decentralization goes hand in hand with absolute data transparency: the ledger can be consulted by anyone within the system, remaining immutable.

EFFICIENCY

Conducting transactions through blockchain is cost-efficient for all participants, as it eliminates the need for third-party intermediaries, necessary in all conventional transactions between two or more parties.

SOLIDITY

Information already entered into the blockchain cannot be modified in any way. This makes the information contained within the blockchain more solid and reliable, as it remains unchanged from the time it was first entered.

IRREVOCABILITY

Blockchain enables irrevocable transactions that are also more easily traceable. This ensures that transactions are final, without any possibility of being modified or annulled.

DIGITALIZATION

Thanks to digitalization, consumers do not have to rely solely on what they read on packaging. With their smartphones, they can read the history of the product by scanning the QR code that contains the certificate of supply chain traceability.
